This does not come as a surprise to me at all. People in Costa Rica do not have the stress that most of the industrial nations have. You combine nature, good air, overall stability and most of all the attitude of the population and you have a recipe for health and wealth.
The Nicoya Peninsula has been mentioned being the one place where people tend to reach the highest age in all of the Americas.

For the 75,000 or so people who live here, life proceeds much the way as it has for hundreds of years. Nicoyans make their living as small farmers, laborers or sabaneros — cowboys who work the area’s huge cattle ranches. Judging by the dusty villages where neighbors hang out on porches, or the rural homes where women still cook on ancient wood-burning stoves, you’d never guess that the Nicoya is the longest-life place in the Americas.

You have to however be in Costa Rica to really feel what the citizens and vacationers are feeling.

And by the way, you can drink and smoke almost everywhere and people still tend to live longer.
There is a lot more to quality of life than not smoking and watching what you eat.
Or it is a combination of everything.
Regardless, when it comes to feeling well and living a happy life, Costa Rica beats all of the other nations in America and probably the world.

Frommer’s Costa Rica

I am not sure just how many of you buy books rather than reading up online, but the one brand of travel books which seems to be loved are those by Frommer and Frommer’s Costa Rica appears to be on top of the list of books about Costa Rica.

There is something about coming to a soccer crazy country like this one and feeling bad when the Costa Rica team or the local team loses. Soccer means more here than Americans who have not travelled much can understand.
Yesterday the United States team got slaughtered, but it was one happy day for the Ticos.
I predict a different outcome for the next one though.

Hosting and other web services in Costa Rica

So I have been told by a good friend from Costa Rica that he would not hire a web hosting company from here, because he believes that Costa Rica net firms are not reliable enough for him to entrust his business in them.
I have at one point agreed, but have since learned that there are quite a few web hosting companies down here which are really good and I myself am referring people to them.
If you want to have an ecommerce site, I would recommend going with companies which have been established and a great trackrecord and I cannot think of any Costa Ricans company which I would (yet) allow to take care of my merchant account needs.
I have recently asked people to recommend me a good web hosting service and Dot 5 Hosting has been highly recommended to me.
A good Costa Rica Web Hosting company seems to be ARWeb.com
When you search on the web, where a hosting service is located should not matter that much.
In English, people in CR are searching for: web hosting, hosting, free web hosting, host, domain hosting, web hosting costa rica, email hosting, free hosting, hosting costa rica, and image hosting.

Chances are you have found the website thru one of those terms. In Spanish you would call it hospedaje de sitio de web.
Hospedaje web, hospedaje, hospedaje barato, and hospedaje en costa rica have almost identically low volumes.

So if you are searching in Spanish, you will most likely see a lot of Costa Rican web hosting sites in Spanish. Feel free to leave a comment and a review for the ones you have used.

Costa Rica Scams

Whenever you get a phone call where money transfer and Costa Rica are being mentioned together, hang up.
You do not want to go any further.
Costa Rica is a scammer´s haven.
You have so many call centers here and many are running reputable programs such as the Gallup surveys, but now you also have the Easy Yellow Pages scam as well as the underground ones calling sweepstakes participants to tell them that they have won $450,000.00 and in order to get the money tax free, they have to send 1 percent of that amount to themselves to Costa Rica via Moneygram or Western Union.
The employees of those call centers have connections in both, so with simply the transfer number they will be able to get that money which you have sent to yourself to Costa Rica.
The soliciters will also give you a toll free number to call a government official to verify the information, and needless to say, it is usually a Costa Rica citizen who has been raised in the U.S., is very good with words and will fool you into believing that you are talking to somebody who is legit.
So when you get a phone call about having won money and Costa Rica and money transfers are involved, do not continue further.
The operators of those centers have contacts in the OIJ (Costa Rican version of the FBI), which will tip them off about having to raid their shop within 3 days.
The employees will immediately move everything to a different location.
Report the toll free number given to you, so that you can help others save their money if they do not let their brain control their actions and are getting too excited about an amount they didn´t win and waste almost 5k instead.
Many of the scammed individuals are too embarrassed to report it while others are being scammed again and again and there are reportedly some who have been sending money on a monthly basis in order to get the big prize.
