Costa Rica Surfing Tips

If besides surfing, your goal is to meet people in Costa Rica, Tamarindo would be the place. Tamarindo is still considered to be the most popular and well known surfing spot on the northern pacific coast. This area is located on the coast and offer easy access to surf breaks including beach, rivermouth and reef breaks. It is a very popular vacation destination in Costa Rica, being surrounded by national parks to it’s nrth and south and mountains to its east. Tamarindo is known as a surf town with ideal conditions for surfing and windsurfing.
Another option would be Mal Pais. But this place is rather remote. Although it is quite an adventure getting there, it is a very beautiful beach. But still, there is not really much to do other than surfing in Mal Pais.
Mal Pais is in fact a little fishing village, with surrounding waters and rich in Snappers, Tuna and many other types of fish. It is basically one decent place to eat on the one road town. Some people prefer Mal Pais, as they see and meet less drunks but more nature.
Both places (Tamarindo and Mal Pais) have incredible waves. Beginners may not even get out there pass the white water. So if you are a beginner, be carefull. Beginners should probably consider Jaco in the south part, Playa Ventana which is south of dominical and the Tamarindo region. Playa Ventanas is just outside of the Las Baulas National Marine Park next to Playa Grande from where one can reach Ventanas beach as well as Playa Carbón.
